Perpetūra

An interactive literary romance · free to play in your browser

Four women, centuries apart. One feeling no one has ever found the right words for. Perpetūra is a free, browser-based work of interactive literary fiction where your choices shape not just what happens, but who you become — and what you almost say to the person standing beside you.

Each story is self-contained and quietly part of something larger. No install required. No account. No cost.

Joseon Dynasty · 1742
A noblewoman. A forbidden glance. Three men who cannot be chosen without consequence — and one route that forgoes them entirely. A story about the weight of propriety and the things you carry alone.

Reine cast
Reine
Belle Époque Paris · 1893
The most seen woman in Paris. The art no one is allowed to see. A dancer navigating desire, ownership, and the gap between the woman onstage and the one who comes home afterward.
Available now
Liuyan cast
Liuyan
Tang Dynasty China · ~750
A blade-for-hire on the Silk Road. A legacy carried alone. Four paths, four ways of carrying the same grief — or setting it down. Newly rewritten end to end: fuller chapters, more of her interior life on the page, and saves that carry over.

???
Present day
For the first time the game leaves the past behind. She lives now, and runs an empire from behind a screen: everyone has heard of the thing she built, almost no one has met the woman who built it. It is the longest road in the game, and her name stays sealed until you reach her.
Unlocks after three stories

The fourth story's name and cast are a deliberate in-game reveal. Please keep her sealed in coverage — “the fourth story,” or “???,” is the framing used everywhere public.

What's In It

Prose, not spritesFirst person, past tense, literary register. No character sprites, no stat screens. A handful of pivotal scenes carry a small illustration, but the pictures are punctuation, not the point.
Branching routesEach story has three to five routes: several people who could come to know her, and a solo path where she chooses herself. The solo path is a genuine resolution, not a failure state.
Quiet accumulationChoices describe what she does, never what they "unlock." Attention accumulates silently and the route settles at the midpoint.
Original soundtrackEvery story, and every path within it, has its own music. Finishing a story unlocks its sung theme song, collected in a Soundtrack tab in the Codex.
A Codex that fills inPeople, places, and the details that don't quite add up, unlocking as you read across all four stories.
Saves & offlineSaves live on your device, with optional Google sign-in to sync across them. Installable as an app, and playable offline.
All three originals rewrittenHyunjae (v1.7.0), Reine (v1.8.0), and Liuyan (v1.9.0) have each been retold end to end since launch. Saves carry over and every choice still leads where it did.

About the Developer

Perpetūra is written and built by Lacunae — a solo developer working in the intersection of literary fiction and interactive storytelling. Every word of every story, every character and the world they move through, every choice and the unnamed feeling beneath it: written, designed, and held together by one person.

AI is a tool in the workshop, not the author. It assisted in drafting, in building the engine that runs the game, and in generating the score; the character art is AI-generated as a placeholder until original work takes its place. The same note appears in the game's own About screen.
